Written by Secretary
Friday, 01 March 2013 20:45

The Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) online registration will be opened on 1 March for early-birds this year! This year, the marathon will be held on 17 November 2013.

The event was a huge success last year, attracting up to 34,500 participants which is an increase of 7,000 participants from year 2011.

The categories for the PBIM 2013 consist of a Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k Run and a Fun Run. This year, the distance for the Fun Run will be reduced to 7km instead of 10km like the previous years. Aside from that, the Full Marathon will also include a new Veteran classification for the Women’s category and not just for the Men’s category. The Full Marathon is opened to those who are aged 18 and above and aside from the Veteran category, runners can also opt to go for the Open category. For the half marathon, it is also open to men and women above the age of 18 years, while the 10k marathon is divided into open (aged 18 and above) and junior (aged 13 and above) categories. The Fun Run is opened to those from age 13 years and above.

Full, half and 10k marathons are competitive and will be timed.  For competitive runs, a running vest, running bib, finishers’ medal and certificate will be given; while a t-shirt and certificate will be given to fun runners. The participation fee for each category is as the following:

The Penang Bridge International Marathon committee has opened its poster design competition for participation by the public this week. Those with creative talents or an interest in graphic design are encouraged to participate and to submit their best design to the committee. The first prize winner for this competition will receive the cash prize of RM2,000 while the second prize winner will receive RM1,000.

Furthermore, the winning design may also be used as the overall design theme for this year’s Penang Bridge International Marathon, if it meets the required standards, which will appear in all promotional items including flyers, billboards, web banners, runner’s guide, ads and more.

Participants are required to submit a printed A4 copy together with a CD containing the working file to the Penang Tourism Development and Culture office at Level 53, KOMTAR, 10503 George Town, Penang. All submissions must reach the office by 28 February 2013 and must include the participant’s name, IC number, contact number and address. The Penang Bridge International Marathon 2013 will be held on 17 November at the Second Penang Bridge. Last year, the committee received a total of 34,500 runners and was named as Malaysia’s Largest Bridge Run by Malaysia Book of Records for the second consecutive year.  This year, the committee is targeting a total of 50,000 runners. We are expecting the event to be much bigger and hope it can be broadcasted on national television this time round. Hence, the committee is actively looking for bigger sponsors and cordially invites organizations who are interested to contact its office.

The early bird (online) registration for the marathon will tentatively open on 1 March at www.penangmarathon.gov.my.
